According to an important Executive Yuan policy, "With social changes and advances in medical and health care, Taiwan's average life expectancy has been on a long-term upward trend. However, declining fertility and mortality rates have led to a rapidly aging population. In March 2018, the proportion of people aged 65 and over in Taiwan reached 14%, officially marking the beginning of an aging society. It is estimated that by 2016, this percentage will exceed 20%, marking the beginning of a super-aging society, leading to a corresponding increase in the number of people requiring long-term care."
Long-term care recipients include those with dementia, people with disabilities, Indigenous people aged 55-64, and those aged 65 and over. While these individuals are primarily older adults, young and middle-aged individuals alike may require long-term care due to disability. Beyond government policy support, how can we, within our limited resources, provide stronger support for the lives of those in long-term care?
Action Plan to Support Elderly People with Disabilities
By chance, we came across the Taipei City Barrier-Free Travel Promotion Association. This association isn't solely for people with disabilities; from its founding to its membership and volunteers, it's comprised of people with disabilities, their families, students, and members of the public who care about this vulnerable group. By combining social resources and strengths, its primary purpose is to help people with disabilities build confidence, find their true selves, and achieve a barrier-free life.
Through our many in-depth visits and understanding, we've come to realize that the long-term care community also passionately advocates for a better life. A better life begins with the mindset, where both the caregiver and the caregiver live consciously and comfortably, leading to confidence and happiness. While this isn't easy, we believe that through sustained care, even with limited resources, a virtuous cycle will emerge.
First, we invite you to support the initiative launched by the Association for Freedom of Movement: It aims to help grandparents navigate their homes, freeing them from loneliness and aging. (The staircase from home to the front door was once a nightmare for our elders. The Association launched its "Stair Climbing Machine" service seven years ago and has since completed 25,000 trips, helping over 2,200 families overcome long-term care challenges and providing respite for caregivers.)
We invite you to lend a hand and support the project: https://bit.ly/3QP1qvU
